A rare and elegant large Chinese Cizhou ware jar, Song/Yuan Dynasty, 11th-14th C, with brown freely painted floral design and fish with alternating bands on cream white slip. A wonderful addition with a rich cultural impression. On the bottom are small felt rounds added to protect surfaces.
Cizhou ware is known for its white or cream-white glaze and the brush work is freely painted in a dark brown, almost black slip, like in the traditional Chinese brush paintings with sophisticated images and design.
