A wonderful Shigaraki massive and rugged red stoneware storage jar with natural ash glaze and raised neck from the Shigaraki region, a mountainous area in today's Shiga Prefecture, southeast of Kyoto. The region gained large popularity due to Kyoto's tea masters in the 16th century for these natural wabi-sabi qualities found in this vessel. You see the gorgeous textured surface with natural ash glaze dripping, cracks and firing spots along with melted minerals throughout the jar. Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century, 23in (58.4cm) high.
